Best Pontiac of all time!

Just trying to get some opinions, what do you guys think the best Pontiac of all time is and why?  

I would say the GTO because its the car that really put Pontiac on the map and effectively started the muscle car era.

I would have to agree on the GTO. But i was 8 yrs old in 77 and the bandit started it for me.  

I also agree "Smokey the Bandit" was the car that got me thinking about Pontiac. It was great marketing via Hollywood and the car had great lines.
But I do think the 69 ram air trans am is note worthy.  

definately the 77 *** my first interest in cars as child.  

I'm there with ya. The 77 T/A is a classic.

But that square GTO is the original musclecar. When the Mustang came out, it was aimed at a different crowd and not a musclecar. Chevy and Dodge were both late to the scene as well.  

Personly i think the 1969 Grand Prix whith a 428 cub 390 hp Royal bobcat engine  

I'd have to go with the '77 Trans Am.  The GTO is a classic, but so rare on the roads these days that nobody remembers them much anymore.  And even people born after the goat debuted remember Smokey and the Bandit.  So, I believe it's a matter of time and demographics...Trans Am may not be the "best" in terms of power, etc. but it sure is the most memorable for the population at large.

I would have to say the Pontiac Aztek     Just kidding!!I would have to say the '77&'78 as far as pure pontiac,thanks Burt.But for pure performance, I'd have to say the 4th gens.1/4 mile times in the low 13's staight off the showroom floor.A few small mods and your in the low 12's.  

Well,I have to say my 1975 Trans Am. I say this because it is the forgotten bird. It sucked right out of the factory. That was the year that they stopped putting in 455's and choked off the 400's with epa stuff. They put the turn signal lights in the grill and got everyone mad. Which I think makes it look awesome. But.........the style... the shape... the lights in the grill....wow. I took my stock 400 and with a mild rebuild made it into a nice street and drag car. I got the car @ 3995 lbs to go 12.64 in the 1/4 mile. Thats with the car being totally stock and all pontiac. I now have a 455 in it which with the small carb and still being mostly stock going 11.94. It should be in the low 11's or high 10's next season. I smoke my friends 2002 Trans Am each time we race. Maybe just because I own a 75 that I love them so much but everyone talks about the GTO or the 77 thur 79 Trans Am. You hardly ever hear or read anything about the 75. This car has won three Championships and doing it with style and grace. Id like to see just once someone say Hey those 75's rock.....Just my two cents PhatDaddy  

I would say the 71 Trans Am 455HO. The combination of torque, handling, and style set the standard for TA's through the 70's.
Although as the 70's wore on, the Trans Am got slower as everyone knows, the same basic style eventually evolved into the "Bandit" TA that really lit off the popularity. The 1970 RA IV TA would be a close second, or maybe it should be first?  

JPeek, from 1978 on, the performance and handling improved after 1974 to 77 was at a standstill.

There are many good Pontiacs and trying to pick the single best is difficult at best. I believe the SD Pontiacs of the 60's started the trend and appealed to the youth of that day. Before the 57 model, all of the Pontiacs were old folks cars that fit between the Chevy's and Buick's/Oldsmobiles of that time. If you can get hold of Pontiac Muscle Cars by Mike Mueller it provides a good history of Pontiac's Performance Legacy. Having worked for PMD from 1967 to 1987 I grew up through the Muscle Car years and it started long before the Firebird models existed. My favorites are the 61-64 SD models. They were the terrors on the Drag Strip back then.
