I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any available one piece oil pan gaskets for the 68 Pontiac 400. I have contacted Summit Racing, Jegs, Fel-Pro, Mr. Gasket, Sce, Victor- Reintz(Don't know if I have that name right). None of these places knew of any one piece gaskets for this engine. All of the 3 and 4 piece gskets that I have used have failed. Thanks for any help on this.

The cork gaskets are the way to go you just have to be sure to use a good quality adhesive on the 4 piece. I believe the Butlers sell a one piece not sure though heres their web site http://www.jbp-pontiac.com/index.html if all else call them they will tell you...

A couple of months ago this was covered in the magazine in the Tech Letters section. It was extremely helpful. I'm sorry I can't remember the month.

I don't know about a one piece gasket but as Pontiac Fever says, the cork 4 piece set is the way to go. I installed mine by thoroughly cleaning the block, timing cover and rear main cap then glueing the end pieces in place with gasket cement (hold them until they stay on their own- admittedly not as easy when the motor is in the car!) Then install the side rail gaskets with cement and hold until secure. Just before you install the pan, put a good quality grey silicone sealant (I use Permatex) on the four corner joints and install the pan immediately, torqueing to spec so you don't distort the gasket. The only trick here is patience while the gasket cement dries to hold each piece in place and remember not to over-tighten the bolts.
Trying to help... 'cause we don't all have to learn the hard way!
