i have a 1977 pontiac firebird i startrd the motor and smoke came from the dash now i have all power except when i turn the key to start it wont even turn over

Sounds like you grounded a wire to the solenoid. If all of your fuses are still alive, check your solenoid wire for power with the key in acc position. If there is still no power you should check under the dash where the smoke came from for a melted or grounded wire. Gl with the hunt.

Check the hot wire running from the + battery terminal down to the starter. Pontiac routed this wire through a vinyl coated steel "hook" so the wire wouldn't flap around and get close to the exh manifold. That vinyl disapears over the years, leaving a razor sharp steel "knife" which cuts into the heavy hot wire.
