Ill be buying my first pontiac trans am between 70 and 81 this febuary and i was wondering if everyone could give me some tips on different things to look for... After my purchase i am planning on restoring the car to my best ability. Mother had one for awhile and i was to recieve that one but due to the firestone recall one of the tires went out and car is no longer available... If you guys could give me some help on different things to look for when buying it and then in  the future rebuilding it that would be great thanks

Depending on where you are, the worst problems could be rust. The most obvious places to look are the floor pans, especially around the body mounts, the rear unibody rails and leaf spring mounts. Other places that are more cosmetic than structural are the bottoms of the front fenders and doors and the lower rear quarters. I've also seen extensive rust at the rear of the trunk below the tail light panel- look under the back directly behind the spring shackles. Otherwise, look for the obvious signs of collision- mismatched and misaligned body panels, repaint etc. Mechanically, watch for general wear on brakes, front end and driveline, watch for smoke on start-up and test drives. Good luck, have fun and Happy New Year.

Trying to help... 'cause we don't all have to learn the hard way!
