Better to use a muffler, in most places it is illegal to remove the muffler completely. Many places don't check, but if you live where emission testing is required, they will likely check. Not to mention the tickets you will undoubtedly get for excessive noise. You can't blame the cops for the tickets if you are thumbing your nose at the laws by not having a muffler. Besides, a car that loud gets old fast, it will only sound "mean" for a short time before even you get sick of it. Remember, what sounds cool to you may be annoying to everyone around you. Your not one of those "headbanger" types who's stereo can be heard for blocks around, are you? That just looks bad on the car hobby in general, the people in the next car may have a sick or sleeping child with them, they may have a migraine or hearing problem which makes loud noise intolerable ( you may have these same problems yourself one day!). Do you really expect everyone around to tolerate your racket? Do the hobby a favor and keep your car legal and reasonably muffled, and we can all avoid having laws passed that forbid us from altering our cars in any way!

P.S. : Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a cool sounding car, but straight pipes have a place - the race track. Even then, we are seeing local legislation that requires mufflers on race cars, to keep the tracks open, because the people who bought their new homes in the new subdivision down the road don't want to listen to the noise of the race track that has been there for 40 years. Don't believe me? Check out Hotrod or Car Craft mags, they often feature drag strips that have been closed and replaced with strip malls, all because towns grew and new neighbours don't want the noise. My local dirt oval requires mufflers on every car to keep the folks who bought homes nearby happy (they are same kind of people who move from the city and complain about that strange smell from their neighbours dairy or chicken farm!), they pay taxes and they have a voice that lawmakers listen to. As for street cars, just look around on Saturday night, the guys who are quiet and don't make a scene where they hang out, don't get hassled by the law. The guys who run around with loud pipes, burning rubber at every corner are the ones who spend lots of money paying fines and complaining about "the police singling them out because they have a cool car". I know, been there, done that, learned how to buy real mufflers and make HP quietly and learned when to use it and when not to!
