Well, a Pontiac block has a different bell housing bolt pattern than a small-block Chevy, so the bell housing on your transmission will need to be replaced with a chevy style. Other than that, I don't think there will be any other issues.
Hope this helps.

Feelin' your pain, but hope I can help keep you from further suffering! The obvious stuff would be the trans bell housing pattern and the motor mounts. Thae other stuff is wiring, Pontiac has the alternator, starter and battery on the left side, Chevy has the starter and battery on the right side and the alt on either side depending on the year/model. Don't butcher the wiring to do this swap, make extensions on the factory harness if you have to( my 79 Formula had a 454 in place of the 301 when I got it and the wiring was so bad I had to change the whole harness when I put a pont 350 in it). Power steering is another concern, the pump and lines will be different, as will clutch linkage(automatic should be easier). Then there is exhaust, you will need at least new head pipes to join at the manifolds or headers. Save yourself the hassle of changing everything(and then changing back some day), sell or trade the Chevy for a cheap 350 pontiac and bolt it in, the worst you will need is the adapter brackets if you use a later block without the extra mount holes. Year one and most of the Pontiac suppliers sell these cheap. Hope this helps. Enjoy that Goat when you get it back on the road!
Trying to help... 'cause we don't all have to learn the hard way!

I'm with barneyformula, I would swap the chev 350 for a Pontiac 350 for a couple reasons. First, they are very cheap and its easy to find one with 5 digit mileage for almost free! Second, it would be a much easier swap. Third, you will lose top end horsepower but have more torque potential than a 350 chevy could ever dream of.
When I had a 350 in my lemans with a cheap 4bl carb swapped on, and a 3 speed manual, and 3.23 rear end, I got 17mpg regularly on the highway believe it or not!
Hope this helps, as I feel your pain with being a student and trying to work on his car! Goodluck!

Park it somewhere, wait till you get a good job, even if it takes some years. Get the engine rebuilt professionally if its original. Don't waste your time with an engine thats not suppose to be in there. Save your money , when you have the resources do it properly.

I like the idea of selling off the Chevy to get a cheap pontiac 350- drop that in the GTO and you're got a cool daily driver for school. The poncho 350, tuned properly and with the usual power adders will also get decent mileage (depending on gearing).
