I am working on the build out of my 79 T/A and I am going in the Pro-Touring direction, high speed road race - aiming for the Silver State Classic (someday) Currently I am working on the Chassis I have the subframes connected, Adjustable sway bars (rancho), Bilsteins, urethane bushings (body, A-arms, etc.) I am thinking of going to a full cage..with a nose hoop. I am looking for suggestions on Brakes, Cooling, Tires and aero. Anyone out there building/built something similar? I harken back to RJ Gottlieb's Camaro...it hit an average speed of 198 mph for the Nevada course, Can a Pontiac do Better? I think so..

racerx, Gottlieb’s Camaro had a full road-race chassis on factory sheetmetal- are you using the same approach or using the factory subframe clip? Either way the full cage is a must- the front hoop will also let you ditch the factory radiator support. I run a Griffin aluminum radiator with an electric fan and low-profile shroud- lets you get rid of that parastic clutch fan.
I'd put the biggest brakes you can on the car- maybe some 13” or 14” Wilwood rotors and 6-piston calipers. I don’t know if the SSC racing body requires full road race slicks, but I like BFG T/A KDW-2s. Stick the biggest ones under the car that will fit without rubbing anything at full travel, and get the lightest rims for them to decrease unsprung weight.
Aero will take some field testing to get right- I’d start with the factory aero pieces and add a front apron, to create a low pressure area under the front for downforce. You may need a NASCAR-style rear spoiler to keep the rear down as well.
I wanted to run this race some years ago, but realized you need to upgrade a lot to run safely (roll cage, fuel cell, fire suppression, seating and restraints, instrumentation, etc.) and had neither the resources or time to do it. Even if you do all of the prep and don’t run, you would still have one badass Firebird. Please post pics of your progress.
