hello im in the process of restoring several 2nd generation trans ams and firebirds i was wondering if you guys use single stage or base coat clear coat? i already did a black 1981 trans am in ppg concept which is a single stage urethane and it looks great, i have a red 81 trans am and 1981 white indy pace car and 1978 trans am se 400 4 spd gold and a 1979 firebird redbird that are all in the process of getting done and am looking to get paint for several of them but im hearing bad things about single stage like cracking down the road but then i hear base coat clear coat just doesnt look right and it doesnt look as good as single stage?

I would stick with clear, in my opinion single stage does not come out as nice. It doesnt seem to give it that deep shine.

Cracking is not from the paint, more from whats going on or happend underneath. With PPG's clear coat, you can get the paint slick and shiny like glass. A lot of die hards don't like it because the cars were never that shiny from the factory.
So it really depends on what look you want for the car, O.E. or the extra shiny custom show car look. If you're fixing these cars for resale, O.E. will probably bring the most bucks, but everything else on the car will have to be original as well. Modified cars and custom looks is a totally different market, it turns into may bring more or may bring less, just have to find the right buyer.
My keepers get the clear.

Most of the time when paint craks it is because there is too much paint on the car. Base/Clear is the way to go IMO.
