Im fairly new to the pontiac world in just buying an 80 Trans Am pace car with a 301 turbo. I really dont plan on keeping the car for its collector value and would like to drive it around. the 301 turbo in it now is in need of a serious rebuild and i am simply going to replace the motor. i have a mildly built Pontiac 350 with an eldebrock intake, holly 750 carb and 6x heads. i was wondering what would need to be done to make the swap work and if i would need different frame motor mounts ect. i also noticed that headers arent available so i considered buying 79 pontiac 400 headers and maybe these would fit? all advice would be greatly appreciated.

80TA, you are in luck, just pull the 301 and bolt-in the 350 on the same mounts, same engine brackets and trans. I believe all the accesory brackets will work as well, but you may have to use longer belts to accomodate the taller deck height. The 400 headers will work fine as the 350 and 400 are externally identical. Post some pics on reader's rides when you are done, we would love to see your car.

with the taller deck height will there be any clearance issues with the turbo hood? and im not really too sure what transmission i have? the guy who sold it to me said it was a pontiac bolt pattern turbo 350 while my neighbor said it was a turbo 200? how can i tell the differnce? and what kind of transmission should i look for?

no hood clearance issues, the tirbo hood is the same height underneath as the flat Firebird hood or the Formula hood. Use a 14" drop base chrome air cleaner and you won't have any problems. To check what trans you have is simple as well, the th350 has both a kickdown cable and a vacuum modulator valve with a steel vacuum line running to it, the th200 has a TV or throttle valve cable instead of a kickdown cable and no vacuum modulator valve. The th200 wasn't offered behind the turbo 301 but may have been swapped, the th350 is plenty strong behind a 350. The only other variable is whether or not the th350 has a lockup torque converter. It is easy to tell, the lockup th350 has an electrical plug on the driver's side just above the shifter arm. It doesn't matter unless you want to put a shift improver kit or higher stall converter, they don't interchange. something I failed to mention before is the engine side brackets, if your 350 is an early block (68-70 or 71) you may need adapter plates to bolt on your later 3-bolt side brackets. If the 6x heads are original to the block, you don't have to worry it is 76 or 77 and will bolt in.

great! i just finished dropping the 350 in the car and it runs like a champ! i had absolutely no problems at all and found that the trans was a th350 so i was pretty happy! my block is a 75 btw and im not really too sure if the heads are original or not.

Glad to hear it all worked out well for you. The 6x heads are possibly original if it was a later 75 block, the early ones used 5c heads which are virtually identical to 6x heads.

I just took the car to the local drags after installing a set of summit headers and changing the carb from the holley 750 to a 600 (gas at $4 a gallon) and to my surprise the car ran a low 13. (13.23)
I curious what else i could do to the car for top end mods. I already have and eldebrock intake, the holley carb and summit headers. Should i go for the RPM heads? are they worth the money?

I would try to fined a set of 72cc chamber heads like the #13,#12,#16,#48 or #62 I have a pontiac 350 as well in a 1979 regal with a set of #13 heads that have a 5 angle valve job and are fully ported and it really woke the 350 up alot.

80TA, Wow! You said mildly built! Any idea what cam is in the engine, which Edelbrock intake is it? Assuming you had a th350 trans, did you use the stock converter, what gears are in it? Most turbo TA's had 2.56 or 3.08 gears. What mph did you turn? How about your 60 foot times? The RPM heads may be a bit big for the 350, Pontiacman8 has a good point, just don't go much over 9:1 compression ratio for pump gas. Great times for a 350 in a heavy car! This is why so many of us like 350's, just don't tell too many people, they'll all want one!

i have no idea on the cam, and ill have to go look at the intake. I did use the the stock converter, have 308 gears and turned it out at 104 mph.My car also has the stock interior (even left the backseat in!) and amazed most people there. The track didnt record my 60 foot times like i requested.
Are the #13's hard to find? and what can i find them on?
