Hi i have a 1981 Trans am and it has the 301 with only 34,586 miles on it I recently bought it and its been sitting awhile so theres alot of dry rot on the vacuum lines. I recently changed them all and its still running a weird i also rebuilt the carb. It runs fine for a while but after it gets really warmed up i can hit the gas and it doesn't o anything does anyone know what it could be from? Also i've heard some bad things about the 301 is the rumors true?

Have you checked the spark plugs, timing.Alot of people don't like the 301 because they did not have hardly any power and were externally balanced but they are a good dependable engine and were built with fuel economy in mind but can be made more powerful with the right combo.

also too you say when you hit the gas that it doesnt do anything... what do you mean like does the engine rev up but no response on acceleration? follow what pontiacman said about the spark plugs and timing... if its been sitting a long time for all you know its got some really old plugs... something too is because it has not been running for so long clean you engine out a little bit with some transmission fluid... that is assuming you have automatic... put in the amount recommended minus like half a quart... then fill the half quart that you reduced from the oil with atf... little run for about 10-15 minutes and drain it again... it acts like a detergent for your engine... and if your worried about it harming the engine dont... when i installed my engine in my 76 i ran with like 3 and 1/2 quarts of oil and 1 full quart of tranny fluid in the engine for like a week and then drained and refilled the fluid was effing FILTHY... so dont worry do all of this follow what pontiac man says and get back to us so maybe we can help you out some more

Thanks alot for your help i changed the spark plugs and havn't had a chance to check the timing. but to futher explain about what happens when i'm going up hills or something i'll hit the gas and it will have no power also if i'm sitting there letting it idle and i rev it there is a 2 second delay like it does want to accept the gas.

A few points to look at, first would be the timing, get a timing light on it and check the base timing and set it to the spec's on the tuneup decal, then while the vacuum advance can is still unplugged from setting the base timing, slowly rev up the engine and watch to see if the timing advances (to tell if the mechanical advance is working). If it doesn't advance, the weights or advance plate may be seized. Plug in the vacuum advance and watch to see if the timing changes, check your decal again to be sure of the hose routing, depending on where the hose attaches to the carb, you may have to slightly open the throttle to get vacuum to the can. Also you might check the color of the accelerator pump in the carb kit you installed, I believe the black pump rubber is compatible with ethanol blended gasoline, the colored pumps aren't and may not pump properly. This info goes back to a tech question in HPP a few months back answered by Jim Taylor.
