I just did a 'someday' and bought a '69 GTO, but I'm only a shadetree mechanic. It has a 400 engine with Hooker Headers and stock starter(s), which seem to 'burn out' quickly. Any help? I am still learning how to use a 'forum' so please see my post in 'overheating pontiac 400' for more info. Thanks for any help.

there is a few things that you can do to keep the starter cool the first thing i do to ANY pontiac with headers is remove the starter and install a remote solenoid kit summit part # G1750 it costs about $25.00 and is the only way to go i just buy a ford solenoid and wire it my self but the kit includes a ford style solenoid and everything you need with instructions to tell you what to do. and problem solved while its out you may also want to use a heat shield (depending on how close the starter is to the headers)any problems let me know

I used to have that problem. I run a Ford solonoid. Even without a heat shield, my last starter lasted 6 years. Simple to wire. Remove small wire off starter terminal. Make a jumper to go across starter terminal to main terminal with battery cable. Take small starter wire and put it on the starter terminal of the Ford relay. You need two battery cables. one short from battery to  Ford solonoid, the second from the Ford solonoid to the starter. Make sure the Ford solonoid is grounded or it won't function. when you turn the key to start, the Ford solonoid is energized sending 12v to the starter. the jumper wire on the GM solonoid gets 12v from the main cable attached to the  starter. End of hot start problems!
