Hi everyone. New here and looking for trouble . I have a stock 389 in my '66 Star Chief. I'm looking to replace the old TH400 (I think) trans with some newer technology. Are there any later model transmissions that will hook up with or without an adapter kit (like a 4L60 or some such beast)?
I'm building a cruiser with up to 500hp down the road. I'm looking to do this a little at a time, so I'm just thinking ahead to what I want to accomplish.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Scott

The 200r-4 will bolt right up. But probably, even built, will not be able to stand up to 500 HP. All of the late model stuff will need and adapter plate. The 4l60 will even have to be worked over to handle that much power. The old 400 with a OD would nice for a long distance runner.

Thanks for the help. For the time being at least, I'll stick with the 400 I have. I found a company that makes over/under drive units around somewhere.
I have one more question. I have an old TH400 that was rebuilt around '84 and wasn't driven after about '90. Is there anything I should do before dropping it in? I hate to go to all that work and find out something's wrong. It worked fine and observing from the outside, the seels look good.
Thanks!
