My earlier ? about a wire coming off the speedo driven gear housing that even the tranny shop could not identify...and a slow leak dripping off the wire is halfway solved:  the wire connects the "controlled spark switch" to the "control spark lead" which is all part of the emission control system. The new question is: should there even be tranny fluid in the speedo cable housing? Could it be that the gear shaft is worn, allowing fluid into this area, or if it's normal for tranny fluid to be here, what's the best fix?  I'm not seeing much in the way of replacement emission parts.  I'm posting a photo of the area in question at www.geocities.com/u4ea@ameritech.net THANK YOU

I looked at the pic (great looking GP by the way!) and I see what appears to be the o-ring around the housing squeezed out between the speedo housing and the trans case, that or silicone. Either way. there is an o-ring there that may be the leak. Possibly it is coming out of the wire grommet, if that's the case I would remove the speedo housing and thoroughly clean it inside and out with brakekleen, then seal around the wire with high temp silicone, allow it to cure fully and reassemble. There usually is some trans fluid back there, but not a huge volume of it.

Barney, thanks for taking the time to help.  That is silicone you're seeing.  If I don't drive the car, there is no drip at all.  After a drive, I'll get a couple of drops of fluid on the mat (yes, one friend suggested just keeping a jug of tranny fluid on hand).  Although I'm pretty sure the drips are coming out of the spark switch we've cleaned the whole area and I'm going to put some miles on it, then next weekend we'll see what shows up.  Thanks again for your suggestions...I'm thinking your idea of sealing that grommet area is going to be the right fix!
