OOOOOOOOK,,Got a couple of questions here,,I'm  in the process of tracking down some 6x-4 heads,,still not gonna mess with the bottom end but will have the heads tanked and rebuilt as nessary. So as far as the cam, Im going to go with the 68, manifolds will be the repop RA. But as far as these 81s went, the 350 tranny has a wire plug in the side case, did this have a lockup converter? Another question regards the clutch fan, seeing that I have both moters and all the acc to work with Im gonna try my hardest to make the 400 look like a 301. will the 301 fan work with the 400 or will it overheat? also is there anr diff between the shakers? And will the 301 rad. work?
Thanks,
Pete

Not to be rude, but I think that is more than 2 questions.  What is it you really want to know?

Yes the th350 trans with the electrical plug in has a lockup converter. The fan will work but would install a new clutch on it. as far as the radiator how many cores does it have and if it is original you might want to replace it any way. Make the 400 look like a 301 any person with pontiac engine knowledge will be able to tell that it is not a 301.

Other than the intake, there aren't many visible differences between the 301 and real pontiac motors. True pontiac people will be able to tell the difference. Good luck!

Because the 301 is a lower deck height motor than the 350/400/455, the shaker scoop and breather were redesigned to fit, they use a smaller diameter air filter than the 400 too. I've heard conflicting stories of whether or not it fits on a 400, it might depend on how worn the mounts are, letting the 400 sit a little lower. The hood is the same, so you might have to source a TA 400 scoop and base, not 403- they are way different and don't come close to fitting.
The th350 with a lockup converter also means you can't get a high stall converter for it without changing the trans. If your 301 rad is a 3-core in good condition, try it, you can always replace it later if it runs too warm.

If your transmission originally had the lock-up converter (electrical connection on the case) you need to find out how to wire these up. The trans will run very hot and burn the clutch pack if the converter don't lock.

If you keep the lockup trans, all you have to do is make sure the wiring is hooked up and the vacuum line to the control solenoid is hooked up like it was on the 301.
