Hey guy's I have a 78 TRANS AM,I built a 461 stroker motor with a 400 block topped it with edelbrock 87cc heads an edelbrock performer rpm intake and a Holley 750 carb. with a Comp Cams 268h grind, 1.65 roller rockers. I promptly destroyed a set of Firestones and a nice shifting turb 350 trans, The car is a hoot!, something of a survivor car ( unrestored and presentable) with functional A/C and cruise. SLEEPER! I am installing a Muncie M21 and have the opportunity to buy an alluminum flywheel, I like them hot but don't need high maintainence, what are the disadvantages of an alluminum flywheel on the street? I have a 67 GTO I restomodded 8 tears ago with a 400 and a 200r4 that has been rock solid reliable and quick enough to enjoy, it's fun and really turns heads, the T/A wont probably ever be as pretty but I want the same reliability from the drivetrain, can the alluminum flywheel be reliable for 2500 miles a year for the next several years or will I wish I Had passed?

You don't say what rear gear. If you have a 3.90+, then aluminum flywheel. If less, then steel is a good rule of thumb for a street driven car. "Disadvantages" are a burned clutch if you don't have enough gear to make up for the light flywheel, particularly with sticky/big rear tires.

It will bog so bad off the line! Aluminum flywheels are meant for circle track cars and so forth. I have seen 3 people try it. They all bogged badly. Changed back to a steel and they launch like rockets. Don't do it. IMHO.

Cool, thanks for the reply Ken, I was worried a little about that but thought maybe the tourquey motor would not be affectED. I'll take your advice and hang it on the wall as a conversation piece. LOL
