Making plans for the winter build up of my 72 455 for my 67 Bird. With an upcomming swap meet soon i would like some info on some good choices for heads to bolt on.Although a GM guy i am new to Pontiacs and need to know the best head numbers to look for or maybe several good choices and the differences.I can purchase pistons to fit the head cc,just want good flowing stock heads. Any help would be appreciated,,Thanks

Does any of those tend to flow better than any of the others? And is there any other things special about any of those numbers that i should know before head hunting?

You'll need dished pistons with all of those except #64 and maybe even those. Flow is roughly the same for all of them.
If you want to use the stock 455 pistons, then 6X-4 heads (76-79 350 and 78-79 W72) are a good choice.

Another option for a mild street mill is the 6X or 5C heads off a 75-78 400, they have 2.11" intakes, 1.66" exhausts, screw-in studs, guide plates, hardened seats and flow as well as any d-port head. They will give about 9.25-9.5:1 CR with standard flattop pistons in a 455. Just an option. Steve

If you keep the short block stock on the 455, the best heads to use are #96 (71 400 heads--96cc)#7K3 (72 400 heads---98cc) both are large valve intake & exhaust. #7K3 do not have end exhaust bolt holes, Also the 6X-8 (98cc & 6X-4 (90cc) which are found on the 76-79 400's & 350's these are large intake and small exhaust valves and flow as good as any D port head. I have a couple 455's one with the #96 and one with the 6X-4. Gasket match your intake manifold and heads and any of these heads will do fine with flat top pistons.----jre
