Just looking for advice. I have a 75 Trans Am, I just had my engine dynoed last week. It is a 455, 30 over, flat top forged pistons, H beam rods, N crank, balanced. Edelbrock 87cc heads, Hyd flat tappet camshaft .525 / .525 lift 108 centerline - 310 deg duration @ .005., gear drive cam, crane gold race rockers stock ratio, heavily modified Edelbrock torker ( the old one)- looks like a BB Chrysler torker now, I cut it all apart, port matched it, ported it and modified the plenum, separate water crossover etc. MSD ignition. Speed Demon 850 carb. Hooker Supercomp coated headers and 3 inch exhaust. Dyno results are 583 ftlbs torque at 4230rpm and 548.6 hp at 5280rpm. I planned on running a fine spline M22, centerforce 2 clutch etc, 12 bolt rear with 3.55 gears. Car is bone stock with CE slide a links, frame connectors.
I am not sure about the 3.55 ratio. It will have 28 inch drag radials on the rear. I am used to using more gear with chevrolets but it seems that this much torque might change that. Also an automatic may be necessary due to the fact that the M22 will probably split in half with this motor. So, what automatic would I consider, I have a number of trans to choose from. A BOP glide, a t 350 or a T400? The car will be street driven but expected to turn some good numbers at the 1/4 mile track. I have not been into drag racing and do not have any idea what kind of time this combination could yield.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide me with information

For the auto tranny I would use a th-400. For a gear ratio I would run 3.73's

Hey furback455,Just my opinion but unless you like revving the wee out of your 455 those 3.55's will work better all around than 3.73's.I have a TH400 in my car and I had 3.73's and hated it.It just makes it rev way too high on the road, unless its never going to go there. The 455 makes its power down lower than a chevy so those gears will do nicely.Thats why GM never made automatics with high numerical gears because with an automatic you have torque multiplication which you don't have with a 4 gear.I dropped a set of 3.42's in my 12 bolt and it seemed like a totally new car.Now it still turned decent times but I wasn't always wishing for another gear.Your motor will last longer as well not always revving the bag out of it.

Or, you could use a 200-4R trans and get a deeper 1st gear than a TH400 and still have overdrive, so even a set of 3.73 gears out back would cruise nice. you could have a quick drag car that you can drive home from the track.

If using a 200-4r behind a 455 pontiac torque monster just be aware that to make it live requires substantial outlay of cash as they do not have the internals to holdup to repeated dragstrip duty. You could put a gear venders overdrive on the TH400 for about the same price as strengthening a wimpy 200-4r.Then you could split gears and have a six speed auto.Low first gears are also available for TH400's but unnecessary for all except for a max effort drag car.
