Sounds like a jumped-tooth timing chain to me. One way to tell is to run a compression test. A 65 389 is high compression (10:1). It should pump 175-190 psi. If it is way lower than that suspect the timing chain has jumped a tooth. You'll have to drain the coolant, remove the radiator and pull the front cover to make sure.
The early timing chains had plastic teeth for noise reduction. After a while the teeth wear out, loosening the chain and allowing it to jump a tooth. Usually there are broken plastic teeth in the oil pan, but they are not going anywhere, so I would not worry about that too much. In other words, you should not have to remove the oil pan.
The solution is to put in a timing chain with metal gears and realign the timing marks. You could install one with a roller chain, but that is not necessary.
I cannot help you with your door.
Good luck!

Could also be valve clearance. Check to be sure clearance is set when cylinder 1 is at top dead center compression. If clearance is set at top dead cemter exhaust by mistake, that could also be your problem.

If your timing chain has jumped and it still has the plastic cam gear change to the all metal gear. I dont know if the gear with plastic is available. IF any plastic teeth are missing I suggest you pull the pan and remove the peices! I had this happen to me on my 66 gto in 1968 and did not pull the pan. Results was 500 miles later plugged screen on oil pump.
