Help, I got deployed with only 2 weeks notice and had to leave. I need to finish my 68 GTO (400 w/400 turbo not original motor/trans) and a buddy is willing to put in the motor. That leaves me with having it rebuilt, about $4000 I am told. Or I can get a motor off eBay or somewhere...
Should I rebuild the 400 which needs new heads, 4-carb & intake... or go with a newer engine like a 2004/6 GTO motor? I've seen some on eBay about $6K complete i suspect the hook up is not an easy job.
Has anyone done this conversion? If so, what will I need to do? Any help greatly appreciated....

I just rebuilt a 77 400. 6x heads, new valves, pistons, rings, bearings, new intake, carb and had the crank turned for less than $2000. I would keep the 400 ...

Since I am deployed down range... Can anyone recommend someone in the Connecticut or Rhode Island areas that can do a good rebuild on my 400?
Thanks

$4k for a rebuild seems reasonable, considering the parts and machining alone will cost about $2500. But for that price you should be getting quality machine work, good pistons (forged KB's or TRW's), 5140 forged rods, ARP fasteners, assembly balanced, motor honed w/ torque plate, etc. Don't get misled by a builder that using high performance parts is not necessary- any decent rebuild will make at least 375-400+ hp, might as well build the motor to be strong and last a long time.

Adding the LS2 is complicated and expensive. Go with the 400 and build it right.
