I just bought a 1962 Catalina that I now believe to be an original Sd car and I need help verifying it. On the trim tag the code reads 12b but after some research I found that 12b is a 421 SD code for 1963 not 1962. My thoughts are that it might be a late 62 that had a early 63 code and motor in it. The car has no motor in it now so I have now way to tell. Has anyone ever heard of Catalinas being coded in such a way?

The only thing I know that would indentify the car for sure would be the perferated frame and the aluminum front sheet metal.  A friend of mine bought a new one and brought it to my service station and we put it up on the lift and checked it out.  The frame definitely was pererated and the front sheet metal was aluminum.  Other than those two features plus the 421 and 4 speed pluss dual quads I don't know how you would identify the car other than the serial number.  Sorry I'm not more help.
