help w/ 400 rebuild

i got a 73 2V stock 400 still running strong w/90k on her.  i would like to put new bearings, time chain, rings and a RA1V or RAV cam leaving the stock CR pistons, and stock heads. New intake and 4barrel Holley or Rochester...  Will this combo run well with such a cam and these heads for a street machine...

not sure of heads size but think they are small 6x maybe.... whatevr came stock on 73 400 2V

Any suggestions would help me get a plan and get-er-done.  thanks much  GGGRRRRRRR

OK, what we need to know is what car this motor is in, how much does it weigh, waht rear gears it has, what trans and how do you intend to use it?
In any case the cams you suggest are not going to give you decent power using the stock 73 400 heads and compression ratio, they will be way too big. Which brings me to the next point, all 400's use the same compression height flat-top pistons, Pontiac varied compression ratio with combustion chamber size in the heads. 6X heads were not available until 76, look on the centre exhaust port for your head number.
90k is alot of mileage for a re-ring job, you will likely need to bore the cylinders and install new pistons to get a proper ring seal. Summit sells a complete overhaul kit for 400's with moly rings, forged pistons, all bearings, freeze plugs, oil pump and gaskets for $609.00. All you would be saving doing a ring job is the price of the pistons and boring and getting a less than perfect rebuild.
Fill us in with the info above and I'm sure several experinced people will give you some solid advice.

Thanks for the reply barneyformula, here's what I got...

Car 1968 GTO Coupe
Wt about 3500#'s
rear is 10 bolt with I think highway gear 2.90's..
Trans is turbo 400
Eng is code Y4 1973 400 ci
I think heads are 98cc w/1.96/1.66

I agree w/ you... better to build it 0.30 over with new pistons. Or should I just get another engine..crate eng???

I'm waiting to get the eng in and running before finishing the paint job on the all new sheet metal.... went to a car show today and saw a 67 Camaro in Raspberry candy apple house of color... now I'm thinking of changing the color of the GTO...

I would recomend a complete overhaul as well and I would recomend this crane energizer cam kit  P#105072 which has a .454 lift for your build. For the rebuild kit you might want to check out www.northernautoparts.com they usually have the best prices and upgrades on complete rebuild kits.

I would rebuild what you've got, a 73 400 is still a good block and you aren't worried about originality with it. I agree with Pontiacman on the cam, in fact it's the same one I have in the 75 350 in my 79 Formula. It's a fairly mild cam that has a lot of torque. As for your heads, I would recommend looking for a set of 5C or 6X heads off a 75-77 350 like mine. They have the smaller chambers (98cc) and big 2.11" intakes, 1.66" exhausts, screw in studs, guideplates and hardened seats and they flow very well.
Other than that, use a stock 4bbl intake and q-jet (they are cheap and make good power), either manifolds or headers with 2.25" duals and a shift kit in the trans. Maybe a mild (1800-2000rpm) stall speed converter and some deeper gears (3.42-3.55), you will have a strong running low-mid 14 second car.
