I want to get rid of the old points ignition system and upgrade.  What would you recommend?

I am using a pertronix flamethrower HEI distributor in my regal that has a 350 pontiac engine in it and it was worth every penny I paid for it.

That price is a bit steep.  Do I have to replace the entire dist to eliminate the points?

Pertronix has an electronic conversion that uses your old distributor, not sure of the cost but everyone who has one says they are easy to install and work great.

Awesome, thanks guys.  I will definitely do the ignition upgrade, but not until I get it running well.  Maybe the valve train problem is partially responsible for the rough running?  Also, how exactly will I adjust the valve lash with the new "self-locking" rocker nuts?  And why is the 20 ft lb method not working?  Everything is stock.  The heads were milled only slightly.

I had 7 fouled black spark plugs, and 1 perfect looking plug.  It ran like crap and there was mild white smoke out of the driver's side header, which is the bank with the good plug in it.  My theory is that the plug was steam cleaned by coolant entering that cylinder via a blown head gasket.  ???
