After running the engine more, it started to run better.  Now I need to tune it: set the A/F carb mixture, set the timing, replace the points with an electronic ignition system, and replace the plugs.  Also, I still need to install self-locking rocker nuts.  http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM-G6800-K
Do those look like good nuts??  They're Summit brand, and cheap...

Excellent!  Thank you so much for all of your help.  I must ask though, what will these new "self-locking" nuts do that my stock nuts do not?  And, how will I adjust the rocker arms with the new self-locking nuts?

Install the nuts on the studs just like the others but you will need to rotate the engine manually or by the starter and watch for the rockers movement starting in the front left side to the back to be sure that you don't miss any when the rockers are in the seated position valves closed then you will set the valve lash to 0 clearance spin the push rod with your fingers as you are tightening the nut and as soon as you feel resistance were the push rod does not turn as freely then you should be at 0 lash and then turn it an aditional 1/4 turn.

You are the man!  Thanks a bunch dude.  I am going to start a new thread about eliminating the points and which conversion kit is best.  I did a search on Summit on the product: PNX-1181 you mentioned earlier.  The results brought up 6 diff products.  Does the kit require that I buy all the parts separate or something?  That total would be enough to buy a whole dist. hahaha  I'll start a new thread on just this topic.
