I was wondering when it becomes necessary to upgrade to four bolt main caps. I have heard two bolt mains are plenty strong. Does any one know how much horsepower two bolt mains can take? Iam contemplating installing billet four bolt caps on my next 455 build, I just dont want to spend the extra money if i dont have to.

Well it is not really the HP output that determends when you need a 4bolt main it is mostly the RPM range properly prepped 2 bolt main block with arp main studs with lite weight pistons, rods, etc. can turn 7000RPM with out failures.

Thanks. I think I will stick with the two bolt mains, and see how much they will take

I have safely run 6600rpm with Ealge rods and TRW forged pistons with over 1000 passes and many thousands of street miles with 2 bolt mains and .060 over. This includes running the occasional NOS making 800hp. The key is make sure you invest in fully blue printing your block and balancing the assembly within 1 gram. This will help keep stress balanced equally on the block. The best thing you can do if you plan to run it hard is to short or medium fill the block. This will also increase the rigidity of the block.

What do you mean by short or medium fill the block?
Thanks...

My machinsit had a guy bring him a 400 and a set of billet 4 bolt caps. After he looked over the block he sent him away because that block didn't have enough material in the webs to bother with 4 bolt caps. I think if I wanted to do it I would search out and 4 bolt block and do all of the above to make it last.
