There are camshafts for the 301.  Other than that, you'll have to port the original heads, intake, etc....

And you'll still have a boat anchor when you're done....

transam4life, just curious but do you have anything constructive to add? Maybe some advice on how your 301 got so fast? Just how fast is it?

The best performance option you have is to find a 400 or 455 donor car and use the motor. The Goatman is right, not much you can do for the lathargic 301. None of the aftermarket stuff made for pontiac will work. The 301 is sort of pontiac's red headed stepchild. Transam4life your in dreamland and know nothing but how to type ***. grow up! Better yet meet me at the drags and I'll show you what a Trans Am is all about!!

I seen on one of the pontiac sites a guy had a trans am turbo 301ci engine that was running in the 12.40-12.50 range.

The 301 turbo motor wouldn't have been so bad if Pontiac didn't cheap out and build it so marginal- the concept itself is valid, since the H-O Racing turbo kit for low CR 400's was decent. 15 psi and 4.56 and only in the mid 12's? Any heathly 400 or 455 in street trim and 3.08- 3.42 gears will run easily mid-low 12's- 11's with a drag set up.

Let's see...spend $10,000 to go 12's in a 301 or $3000-4000 with a 400-455??? No brainer! How much $$$ do you want to spend trying to prove how dumb you are? Don't get me wrong, anyone who has a burning desire to do something different and reinvent the wheel is free to try. But if you want good advice so you don't go bankrupt beating your head against the wall, listen carefully. The 301 was a bread and butter grocery getter with poor head and intake design and a weak bottom end that wasn't very powerful or reliable in the first place let alone trying to build more power. There are no aftermarket heads or intakes (that fit) to improve the situation and little else to bolt-on/in except cams.

Have you seen inside a 301?  The block is windowed to save weight.  Not much holding the crankshaft in place!  Parameter wise it's the same bore and stroke as a chevy 302 but you can't spin it like one.   Performance gains were limited to keeping it below redline.  Pontiacs answer was to add a turbo, but the technology was weak and a carb couldn't meter fuel very well with the draw thru design.  Most motors grenaded a long time ago due to detonation.  Best bet is to add an msd boost controller, jet the carb fat, and add a better turbo with wastegate. Keep the revs low and she might last...for a while!
