i own a 1980 pontiac trans am with a 301... and on the right side of the carb theres this small black rectangular box thats seem to coroded and fallen apart i cant seem to figure wat its for... can anyone help me out???

It might be a thermostat assembly which will have a rod connecting to the carb.  I’m betting this is for the automatic choke.

Post a picture of it, some of these cars had computer controlled q-jets so it may be part of that system.
