i have a 1978 trans am 6.6 400. i bought it a month ago and it came with 670 heads on it. it has a hei distriduter with accel up grade, headers,an edelbrock intake manifold, shaker hood with k&n filter, accel spark plugs with .060 gap.im trying to figure out what i have and if its right. i have questions and if anyone can help me i would appreaciate it very much. first i want to know if my compression is too high for pump gas cause the guy i bought it from drove it all the time. second is my spark gap correct with that motor/head combo? third what valve covers and gaskets do i get for it cause my valve covers are leaking a little oil and i want to replace them both. fourth i replaced the radiator with a heavy duty 4 row and replaced the thermostat with a 180 degree one and my car still runs between 210 and 225 is thi normal and if not what can i do about it if anyone can answer any of theese questions it would help me so much thanks in advance

The 670 heads are 1967 and have 72cc chambers and will give you 10:1CR with flattop pistons and anything over 9.5:1 is too high for pump gas. Have you checked or replaced the radiator cap it might not be holding enough pressure. What about the fan if it is a clutch fan is the clutch in good working condition.

i had the same heating problem with my 400 that had 670 heads. the compression in my motor was to high. and because if that i ditonated my motor and spun a bearing.be careful, you can get away with detonation by messing with the timing, but thats only a band aid.i only had 700 miles on my motor when a stupid $7.00 dollar bearing ruined my $9000.00 motor.look up ROCK N ROLL ENGINEERING and on that site go to FAQS and on that page click on COMPRESSION EXPLANATION i beleive youll get all your answers there.
