Greetings Pontiacsters. Just finished a rebuild on a 400, 1972 engine in a 1978 Trans Am. Pretty much stock - daily ride. Just a few things I should be able to diagnosis by now, but wiser ones can save me a lot of tinkering. After getting the timing and carb all set up really close to perfect, I'm suddenly getting a fluctuation on the voltage meter which can be seen when it seems to miss slightly. All new spark plugs, fresh weights and stock springs in the HEI distributor. If a new plug is not already fouled, I'm not sure what to look for. The voltage just dips randomly at idle, I can't find any loose ground wires shorting out.

Did you reinstall the braided ground strap from the back of the head to the firewall? If so, is the connection clean and bare to metal? Is the contact between the alternator case and brackets clean so there is a good ground there? Steve

It is now, and yes that did the trick. I'm also curious about the extra red wire coming off the positive battery cable. I thought it was just an extra power source, but someone said it was a ground which should be connected to metal. That seems wrong. Thanks Steve

On my Firebird, the extra red wire goes to the positive post on the back of the alternator. Glad I could help. Steve
