Unless you plan on replacing the pistons and having the block boring and honed you will just be wasting time and money anyway. Better plan on 3-4 grand for someone that knows what their doing and has the equipment to do it. If someone tells you this motor will be fine without a torgue plate hone thank them for their time and leave. Stock or hot rod???

65pmdgto1 is correct on torque plate honing-this procedure duplicates bore distortion when heads are torqued upon assembly-Pistons,rings,bearings etc.are purchased after overbore, crankshaft condition(turning)are determined.Different quality of parts are used in specific applications-Race hyperutectic, forged.Street cast Many excellent coatings offered for durability, heat sheilding-(piston tops, skirts)Lot of info availible from these experienced gentlemen on this forum-Listen and learn, ask questions use your computer(internet) there are no useless questions-Many myths and fairy tales abound concerning engine building ask and document.

A Pontiac 400 engine can be built to many different levels, trial and error is not the issue. The level of performance that you are seeking is. Is it for racing, daily driving, or showing off at traffic lights?

Start with your budget, that will determine where you go from there. I have only had 1 pontiac rebuilt [1977 400] and ended up with almost 4000.00 in it. I would like to hear from pontiacman8 as to what he reccommends for a budget street motor. With the economy what it is right now I think we are all looking for a few ways to save a buck. BTW I have not installed the motor it is still on the engine stand.

Hey there smoothdawg well when I build engines for me or my customers I start by ordering a kit from WWW.northernautoparts.com they have good prices and good quality parts in there kits they also have some upgrades on gaskets, cams, and timing set at a additional cost but still at reasonable prices. For a street engine that will never be turned over 5000RPM there is really no need for aftermarket rods just a good set of ARP rod bolts the stock rods are made of arma steel and are not all that weak like some people say they are most rod failures I have seen are caused by the factory rod bolts so most street engines will be fine using the stock rods.
Any thing else you what to know just ask if I may not have answered all of your questions. But ultimately the cost usually will depend on who is building the engine because of labor prices.
