I have a 66 bonny convt. with 98,500 miles. I had the carb rebuilt about 5 years ago and seemed to work all right for 2 years then came the old problems of having to pump the pedal about 50 times while cranking and then it would start and would stall if I tried to go forwrad or backward until maybe 2 minutes of warm up.even when warm taking off from dead start requires a couple of pumps to keep from stalling. I know it sounds like acc. pump is being tricky but car runs great except for that. on cold starts I tried to set choke and when choke works then the car runs too rich when warm even sputters on kickdown. car sits alot here in ohio and the entire engine has never been apart. replaced the orig water pump in 2007. I know my 389 could use a rebuild but it runs too good for now. thanks for any help or ideas.

I'm 90% sure the pump is ok and I talked to a guy today who said the rebuild kits from a few years ago the rubber parts were breaking down from stuff in the gas. he has been working on pontiacs far 40 years and he said he would rebuild mine again. so hope that will cure it.

talked to my carb rebuilder today and he got the rebuild kit and it came with a leather part for the accelerator pump. he said the leather part that was put in 5 yrs ago was already distorted and degrading from what's in todays gas. he needs to find a yellow rubber part NOT black or NOT orange but yellow is what will stand up to todays gas. does anyone know where to find such a part ? he works at a napa store and is still trying to find the right part. thanks.

Don't knowwhich brand of kit he is working with but a Carter kit that doesn't have a quart inch of dust on it should have the right stuff. Bought one a couple of years ago and it had 2 or 3 accellerator pumps included. Also if the fuel pump is not newer than 5 years it should replaced.

I have an update. after the carb was rebuilt I was still having problems taking off from dead start. I put on a new fuel pump no help. I even tried the pertronix ignitor no help. I finally set the timing about 6 degrees more advanced and the beast is alive. this car now runs with about 50 % more power. I have checked the timing before and it showed as normal advance. now there is no hesitation starts really quick and just flat out runs damn good.

I have had the car about 23 years and it ran ok with about 8 degrees advance. now at about 14 it feels like I rebuilt into a 421.well maybe not quite that good. I have the distrbutor turned to where the vacuum advance housing is almost hitting the manifold. no pinging no dieseling. I always thought my 389 was just a little tired and it ran ok never overheated or pinged now it runs great.

Ya 12-16 degrees is about the norm. for a Pontiac engine.

thanks for the info pontiacman8. I was a little worried about the cap being so far turned that I can't advance it any more. but it runs so good now that I am just going to enjoy it.
