Unless the lines are leaking or rusted through, they should be fine. For cosmetic purposes you can remove the lines and shine them up with the wire brush side of an electric grinder. You can make them shiny as new in a few minutes. If it is actually leaking fluid, here are three alternatives: (1)Find the leak, clean the line out well, sand off any rust around the leak, and repair the leak with "J.B.Weld," available at any auto parts place. (2)Measure the length of the lines (including the curves) and buy new ones at an auto parts store. They can be carefully bent to match the old lines. If you bring in the old ones, most auto parts stores can do it for a small fee. (3)Any 1970 through 1981 Trans Am's are going to have similar lines, regardless of the engine. So you can get them off of any junk Firebird of that era and shine them up. I have a 403 also, and the cooler lines are from a 400. I just had to bend them a little to keep them from touching the engine block. Hope this helps, good luck.

Are we talking about transmission cooler lines or an oil cooler? The trans lines come out the right side of the trans and run along the right side of the engine to the rad tank. I've never seen factory engine oil cooler lines on a TA. If it's the trans lines, they are 5/16" steel double flared lines available in straight lengths at any parts store or you can order pre-bent replacements from FineLines or InLine Tube. If you buy the straight tubing you will need a tubing bender to do a good job. Remove the old lines and use them as a pattern to bend the new ones.

I would not recomend patching a pressurized line with J B weld or any other kind of
quick fix-the lines are not real expensive- splice the lines with trans cooler hose until you can order or buy from Auto parts store. and receive replacements.Brake lines are double flared are'nt they? My 94 T/A has an oil cooler( rubber hose) of course we are talking about 2 different gens.
the correct repair is replacement Patching would a means to get home or a temp.fix

hey the lines are on the right side and so are the tranny lines.the tranny ones go to the front the oil lines go to the back of the radiator.the line look like a combination of high pressure rubber and steel lines that go back to the oil pump housing.the steel lines dont look to bad but the high pressure lines have a meshlike coating and its strating to fray.i would just hate to see someone loose a motor over a line.so its not a factory option?i mean it doesnt look aftermarket and when he bought the car it came with alot of paperwork that even tells what they did when they rebilt the motor but they didnt list anything at all on the line.if its not needed they he should be able to pull the line and plug the radiator right?any thoughts or advice would be helpful.oh also can he the straight tubing  and bend his own lines if he wants?

Sounds like an aftermarket oil cooler setup, carefully remove the lines and take them to a hydraulics shop, they can usually make just about any line and you won't have to worry about the pressure being too high.

Only aftermarket parts can help in this.
