i picked up a 76 t/a to rebuild, checking the numbers i found serial # 2W87Z6N5489XX firewall # 26N5489XX motor # 26N5489XX trans # 24N5489XX the last 2 didgets match on all but the transmission # has me confuzed, it is stating the year as 4 but all sequencial numbers point to a numbers matching car. Any thoughts as to why? or am I wrong thinking it's numbers matching. The motor and transmission are out of the car and I double checked the numbers. What is your take on this?

I wouldn't worry too much about it, remember these numbers were stamped on the assembly line by two human hands. We all make mistakes from time to time and I suspect that this is what happened to your trans. Is there any sign of tampering, such as grinding marks on the vin pad or obvious re-stamping? What trans do you have, the T10 4 speed or the Th350 auto? According to your vin, the engine is the 400. Do the date codes stamped on the block show a suitable lead time before the build date of the car? How about the trans? I've never looked for trans date codes (it never mattered on anything I bought) so I'm not sure where to find them. Hope this helps a *** Steve

Thanks Barney, no signs of grinding or filing on the TH350 vin pad and the stamping seem to be original, all perfectly in line, spacing even and slightly running uphill. I think a restamp would not be aligned 100% and spacing would be slightly out. I was not to worried about it being a #'s car when I bought it but thought I would check. If it is numbers matching that would just be a bonus.
