Be sure that the stock bore is in good shape first so you don't waste your money. I would stay away from those clevite bearings they are soft and I have had problems out of them. Now for the moly ring they require a finer grit hone to be used in the cylinders so that they seat properly. If the stock intake and carb. is in good working condition then they should work just fine but if not then I would get the edelbrock perfomer and a 750CFM holley vacuum secondary carb.

The Edelbrock manifold is only as good as a stock one from the late 60's but it is lighter.

I'd go with everything pontiacman states but would go with a Edelbrock performer RPM for the intake.Works better with the powerband on most pontiacs,1500-5000 RPM.It is much better than the stock intake and you will notice the difference.

Pontiacman8, what bearings do you reccommend? How do you feel about boring a 1977 W72 400 .040 over?

I would keep the stock quadrajet intake and get a Quadrajet from Cliff Ruggles....

i've used that cam before. stick with the performer and don't go pass a 700cfm carb and you'll be fine.

I have never heard of a problem with Clevite and I have built hundreds of motors with them. A soft bearing is a good thing on a Pontiac. This is because the small filter does not flow enough oil, which is why Pontiac put a bypass on the filter bracket. When the oil is cold, or the engine is at high RPM, much of the oil bypasses the filter. A soft bearing will absorb any contamination or debris in the oil, and will stay in the bearing without scratching the crank for the rest of the life of the engine. Hard bearings hold the debris with no where to go, so it stays in the bearing and tears the *** out of the crank.
The Edelbrock RPM intake is a fantastic choice on a Pontiac engine from 200hp to 600hp. It makes both more torque and more HP in even the mildest builds and as you upgrade your motor it works with any cam shaft size, compression level, or cylinder cylinder head.

Not wanting to offend Pman8 here but I have always used Clevite 77 bearings with great results as well. I just make sure the clearances are right, the oiling system is right and be sure everything is clean when it goes together and I've never had a bearing issue. In years past I always used Valvoline oils but currently I use Shell Rotella T 15W40. In the race car I change bearings every second season as preventative maintenance, but seriously, it is a waste of money as the bearings are always perfect. Steve

PS: I would love to know who makes the bearings for Caterpiller, Cummins and Detroit! These things run up to a million miles on their bearings and even then they don't show any significant wear! Sure they are running at only 1500rpm with a max of 2100, but they are almost always under load and they have huge 5-6" mains and 3-4" rods, talk about bearing speed! Steve

No offense taken I have used clevite bearings in to different engines and had problems out of them but I have never had any problems out of speed pro or federal mogul or king bearings yes every thing was clean. A buddy of mine uses clevite bearings and has never had a problem either but no clevites for me any more.
