I have a 67 4 barrel Rochester carb that is not working so good. I get black smoke and with what appears to be water out of the both tail pipes. The idle mixture screws are totally infective. I can take both screws in or out all the way and the idle doesn't change. Any ideas?

time to rebuild it... the carb that is...    price carb kits around..   prices vary greatly.. sometimes more that 40 bucks..  and you have to have the carb number to get the right kit..

read up one it... and beware... do not use high pressure air to blow it dry.. there are tiny metering plugs in the top cover that will be blown out.. makes for terrible hesitations..    why do i know about them.. i blew them out of my aunts 67 396 caprice classic quadrajet... do you know how hard it is to find something less than 1/8 of an inch in diameter.. and shaped like a freeze plug with a tiny hole in it..   took my hours on my knees... ...   they are called idle air bleeds.. and high speed air bleeds..

read up on the various versions of the quadra jet..

here are a few articles ... each picture usually had text also..

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/edelbrocks_q_jet_carburetor_r eplacment/index.html

this one covers the electronic version.. but mostly the mechanicals...

anybody who even thinks of owning a q jet.. needs to read and book mark these articals

feel free to ask questions..    also... if thats the original carb.. you want to do that one..  don't let some carb shop swap you ...  post the number stamped into the drivers side..    70??????

wow the system puts spaces in the links...    they all do work... i have tried them.. copy all of them them and paste them into an email to your self...   the links should then work... and you will have them all..

that carb is probably the original...   it comes back to a 1967 400, 428" R-4 4MV

these are similar carbs on that year ..   if you have problems.. reply to the post..      you might really plan on spending the extra few bucks and replace the float also..

oh... and when you take the top cover off...   take the plastic float rod retainer off... put a finger on the top of the needle and seat.. while holding the float pin down.. take a look at the float level... i almost always.. do this..  then scribe a line inside the float bowl so i can put the float back to the exact same spot..   or i can put it back there if the float setting the paper calls for is different..    just makes it easier to reset the float..

wow/. i googled your carb number...

and came up with this article

whats really funny ... the carb kit shown.. will not fit that carb... its for a later model qjet..  FYI...

great ... they also mention the air bleeds in the top cover that you can blow out... if you do it wrong..

Thanks for the info waynep7122. I have a 400 WT that this carb is sitting on.
This thing is really running rough, bad surging at any speed. My eyes burn so bad I could give myself a Lasik surgery if I stand behind it long enough.
I pulled the top off and it has a brass float. The gasket doesn't look to hot either. The choke won't come off high idle unless I do it manually, and on and on. Definitely time for a rebuild.
Thanks again
