I have a 79 Formula with a 301. Have been looking at a 400 engine swap. I found a L78 400 that is a fresh rebuild. I have seen a lot of question on here about the durability of the L78 block. I am looking for good street performance with little to no drag racing in the picture. Here is the motors specs. The block has been bored .040 over, it has been line bored, all new parts include ARP studs and bolts, eagle rods, keith black hypereutectic pistons with gapless rings, it has a comp cams RAIII cam, hardened pushrods, manley stainless steel valves, Guide plates, comp cams roller tip rockers, an edelbrock manifold and carb, and a new set of Ram air manifolds. The guy is looking for $2,200.00  It sounds like a screaming deal, but was just looking for some expert guidance from real pontiac guys. Thanks!

It sure looks like a great deal, if he has receipts to prove everything is in there and you can verify it with the machine shop that did the work. Alot has been written about the late 75-78 400 blocks being weak and granted they are a lighter casting than earlier blocks and Pontiac obviously agreed since they revamped the earlier block for the W72 motors. However, in a purely street application that isn't going to see constant pounding, I would think it should be fine. The RA3 cam you describe is either a copy or improved version of either the 068 or 443 cam, either will be quite streetable, but real specs would be helpful as P-man8 has already mentioned. What is the casting number of the block and heads? Maybe it isn't the late block, the numbers will tell.

Thanks for the responses guys! The block is a 77 and the head are 6x. The cam is the 068 exact reproducton to the original RAIII cam. I talked with the guy again today, and he has all receipts for the engine; as well as the machine shop info. The machine shop is a few blocks from where the engine is so I can get in touch with them before I buy it. I am thinking I will buy it. Your opinions on it being fine for street use have helped alot. This motor is complete from air cleaner down to the oil pan; and from the clutch set up in the rear to the fan assembly in the front, and has the new RAIII replica exhaust mnifolds included! Besides I know i could never machine and build my 67 yc 400 for $2200.00 Thanks

Ya The main webbings are weaker in the mid 1975&up blocks but should hold up fine for a street engine.
Sounds like a great deal to me.
