The first thing I need to say is kudos to one of the best car magazines on the planet. The wealth of information that I have learned is priceless. I have two questions on my 1965 GTO restoration street rod project. I placed my tired numbers matching 389, 2-speed and open rear in my shed. I’ve decided to go with a more robust drivetrain combo. My first question is about what carb setup to use. I purchased an original 1969 GTO 455 which I had rebuilt and bored .030 over and a new original spec cam. This engine came with the original cast iron manifold and quaderjet carb. Over the years I’ve collected both the 1965 and 1966 tripower setups. I love the look of the tripowers, but I’m not sure out of the three setups, which will give me the most overall power. After reading Jim Hand’s Max Performance Pontiac book, I’m thinking perhaps the 4 barrel setup would be the winner, but how much power would the 65 or 66 tripower lose against the 4 barrel? If it’s not significant, I’ll go will go with the tripower cool factor. My next question is which auto transmission and torque converter combo would work well for this motor? I would like to go with an overdrive unit for occasional highway use, because I purchased a 12 bolt 410 rear. If I’m better off changing the cam or the rear gears please let me know. MIKE SAMMARTANO
