we droped the tranny oil pan on the 350 trans on a 79 trans am and what we found was very very fine medal shavings.is this the sign the tranny is dying I was told it was rebuilt 4000 miles ago and I kinda took his word for it as the oil was bright red and super clean but the filter and oil pan was cover in very fine medal shavings. The trans seem to works great shifted fine and had no slipping but if its nearing the end of its road cuzz someone effed up rebuildint it I would want to replace it now as its out of the car.

That would probably be just the new wearing off or breaking in, which ever you want to call it. Keep your eye on it- fluid level, cleanliness of fluid, etc. I probably wouldn't worry to much, but may save some and take to  rebuilder and ask his opinion.

I agree, that's why the filter's there. The one thing I might add is to take the transmission to someone who specializes in high performance one's. I had never ending problems with my TH350 by taking it to the familiar names that are on every corner. Finally, I took it to a guy who works on NASCAR transmissions. The first thing he did was get rid of the shift kit, modify the valve body to perform the same function, and replace the cheap parts with heavy duty racing quality parts.
The second I drove out of the place it was obvious that everything was different.
I've never had a problem since and I get rubber in every gear.

You will always fined some metal in the transmission pan usually about a tea spoon full as long as there wasn't any large chunks it should be fine.
