A little help with your decoding delema.I've got a 1978 manual in front of me.I believe that the codes were different,but only in that the 1978 vin included a production date. I will proceed. 2=division code(pontiac) W=sales codw(trans am) 87=body style(2-door plain back hard top coupe) Z=engine code(6.6L,403cu,4 bbl,oldsmobile division) 7=last digit of year(1977) N=assembly plant code(Norwood, ohio) From 1978, a 6 digit number was added to identify the production number of your particular vehicle. hope this helped out

Hi there, i thought the Z in the code was a pontiac 400 ci not the olds 403. the 400 engine was the better one to have . try hitmans pontiac site , you'll find all NO crunching there

Hi mate . look for Y81 or Y82 in your cowl tag, or on your build sheet if you have it . the cowl tag is on the bulkhead or fire wall as you call it on drivers side. I think im right
