Hi! i'm new to this forum but i will be spending alot of time here from now on.
Long story short.. my boss gave me an engine from his pontiac firebird -68 which turned out to be -71 block with 71 heads(94) and 4-port intake(496140) from 1975. Next summer i'm going to buy his -68 firebird and will have to engines to work with ..the one he gave me and the one that's in the car.
Anyway im going to tune up the eninge he gave to me and im very happy if someone could give me some tips on which cam etc i should put in.. i want as much hp as possible with the stock heads (i wont put as much money on the eninge as i've done to my corvette).
I've never worked with a carburator before so dumb as i am i just bought some random which turned out to be a carter thermo quad 6-2141.. think it's 800cfm? .. i might be wrong. Is this carb something i can work with or should i buy a new one?
I've sand blasted the whole engine and will put it apart this weekend and i've started to look at parts i will be buying.
If someone can help me out alittle that would make me very happy
/regards the swede Daniel

Are you planning on a complete rebuild?

No there's nothing wrong with the eninge so i wont be buying any pistons or rods.
The engine hasn't been running for 10-15years but is in good shape (atleast my boss said so)... it all makes clear when i put it apart.

I guess i'll go with the lunati 00072LK that you've suggested to others. As i'm a "newb" on carbs so can you tell me which air cleaner and size that fits my carb? (if the carb i bought is anything to work with)

Ya that cam works really well. be sure to break it in properly and use valvoline VR-1 motor oil or a break in additive. I use Holley carbs. and don't know much about carter carbs. 600-650Cfm, will be enough fuel for the 350.

I put apart the whole engine today and noticed that there are no holes on the sides on one of the heads ?!?! is it supposed to be this way or can i just drill some new ones .

Is it worth to mill the heads down(how much?) and get rid of those sharp edges in the combustion chamber?. (think i can do the "milling" almost for free)

Ya I know but it still is not working. You would have to use a up load site like photo bucket and then post it right here in a post

It worked! I see what you are talking about some Pontiac heads did not have the bolt holes on the ends of the heads for the exhaust manifolds a good machine shop may be able to drill and tap the holes in the heads from the looks of the heads I would have them checked and gone through looks like they need it or fine a better set of heads if power is what you want like the #12.13,48,62 or 670 heads. I have a set of well ported #13 heads on my 350 in my 79 regal.
For the head milling it is just not a great idea because it can cause other problems.

I would also completely check the bottom end out as well.

Ok thanks for the help! will check the bottom end out aswell, just didn't have the time today :P.. the heads aren't as bad as they look on the pic.
I might be wrong but tbh i can't find any new/better used heads for my engine... are they hard to get? :/
For my chevy 350 it wasn't so hard
