I lost a lobe on a new Comp XE 274 cam, 50% gone. I sent it back for replacement. They said I should have removed the inner valve springs (Wish I had now) but it sounds like they are gonna replace it. I am however wondering to what detail I need to clean out the engine to remove the debris. Any suggestions welcome.

Good luck. There is debris everywhere. About the only thing you can do is to change the oil a few times after running it for a few minutes.

If it was mine I would disassemble and clean it to be sure and check for ohter damage as well.

At the very least drop the oil pan and flush the engine through with engine flush. Personally, short of a teardown, I would turn the crank back and forth manually, slowly with a wrench while someone pours something like "Marvel Mystery Oil" into the heads in case there's any big chunks lurking. If you feel it start to bind at any point, it's a piece of cam which you can remove. Turning the engine over with the starter might mess it up worse if there is a lot of broken metal. Once any "kidney stones" drop out you should be good to go.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to raise the motor, drop the pan, and check a few bearings and oil pump and filter. Right now I cannot find any metal anywhere in the engine or the oil. It must be in the filter? More later.
