hey poncho addicts, im building a 1967 firebird, i have a 1964 pontiac gto 389 that i think is the 325hp block, cant find the codes on the engine exept for year, anyway, its been bored .40 0ver so ithink if i did my math right it should be a 396ci or so, heres a list of parts i have for it, need help picking out more stuff.. i will put a star * on the parts that im not sure of
389ci gto block .40 over now a 396ci
*i have a choice of heads i have either 4x (3h) or i have a set of 6x (8) which both need milling and valve job, WHICH ONES ARE WORTH PLAYING WITH?
i have flat cast alluminum pistons, stock rods, stock crank,
*camshaft i want to go with the lunati Part Number 60903
Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 268/276 Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/233 Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .489/.504 LSA/ICL: 110/106 Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd RPM Range: 1600-5800 Part Number: 60903 * see what u think of the cam, any sugestions? *intake, i have an edelbrock performer (not the performer rpm)
*i have scorpion 1.5 alluminum roller rockers
i have an msd 6AL ignition box
*i need to know which oil pump , how much psi to go with. *should i dump the windage tray and get a crank scraper instead? *which headers should i go with the 3 tube or 4 tube?
this car will be an all around performer, dont want to really go past 5500 rpm becouse then id have to change the rods, the car will be used primarally for the street and occasionally on a drift course, i think ill be the only 1967 pontiac firebird drifter in the game. i used to be a drag race fan and occasionally race in the backstreets but that got old for me. any help would be apreciated.

Sounds like an interesting build!
Wish I could help ya on the heads (don't know too much about 4x or 6x heads besides that they are mid 70's era and can be made into really good performing heads). For the cam, I would go with something a little smaller, that's too much lift for a poncho motor, i'd say get something more on the lines of a 465 lift. I just went with a melling oil pump for my poncho 350, oh as for the headers I would go with 4 tubes.
I keep hearing about the rev limit on a poncho motor equipped with pontiac rods and I still wish I went with forged rods on my rebuild. What I was told was since my motor is rebuilt, I can hammer it past 5,000 RPM (at max 5,600) for the first 50,000 miles every so often. After that, anything past 5,000 RPM is to much stress on those rods with the possibility of one breaking and destroying the whole block

Valve spacing and location changed in 1967. The 1961-66 heads is interchangeable. I would use the melling #M54DS oil pump. Be sure to have ARP rod bolts installed in those stock rods. I would also go with the Lunati 60901 cam instead.

I would go with the 6X heads and the vin number for the engine should be on the passenger side just under the cylinder head on the front. The code for the casting date is next to the distributor (BTW you can find all of this on net). Keep the windage tray. Some of the other regulars can give you better info on the cam than I can.
A 67 Drifting? I just got a chill.

Drifting: Grossly overboosted tuner cars on rock hard rubber band tires with 20" bling wheels showing that they haven't yet learned how to hook up all that horsepower! Seems counter-productive to me, I always thought the idea of more HP was to get somewhere faster than the other guy! LOL!!! Steve
Trying to help... 'cause we don't all have to learn the hard way!

Late one 80's Saturday night, the usual street racers gathered behind Hobby Airport. I made a point to only occasionally show up with my 455HO 4speed T A. My wife would duck down, hold her ears and not look for a minute until I cackeled loudly and putted on home.
Anyway, this night we slowly appeared from the darkness and evidently the whole clan had been waiting. A souped up Nova appeared beside me under the street light, everyone got off their cars and lined up beside the street, a guy with a checkerboard flag appeared several yards in front of us, and another guy came out with a bucket of something that looked like water and proceeded to slop it under both of our cars. That particular Trans Am could barely get any traction on dry asphalt with 295's. So the guy with the flag walks out and counts out something and drops his flag (literally drops his flag).
He had plenty of time to pick it up while the Nova spun around a few times before running in to the curb. Me and Cil just sat there and watched, turned up "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles on the radio and ambled on home.

from what ive heard forged rods are so much cheaper now should realy go with them, that way you have no worries if you miss a shift and see the other side of 6000rpm.
4x heads i think are small valve(1.96),someone please correct me if i am wrong

The 4X 1H,3H and 7H had 2.11/1.66 valves and the 4X 4H had 1.96/1.66 valves
