A little help with your decoding delema.I've got a 1978 manual in front of me.I believe that the codes were different,but only in that the 1978 vin included a production date.  I will proceed.

      2=division code(pontiac)
      W=sales codw(trans am)
      87=body style(2-door plain back hard top coupe)
      Z=engine code(6.6L,403cu,4 bbl,oldsmobile division)
      7=last digit of year(1977)
      N=assembly plant code(Norwood, ohio)
  From 1978, a 6 digit number was added to identify the production number of your particular vehicle.
    hope this helped out

Hi there, i thought the Z in the code was a pontiac 400 ci not the olds 403.
the 400 engine was the better one to have . try hitmans pontiac site , you'll find all NO crunching there

Hi mate . look for Y81 or Y82  in your cowl tag, or on your build sheet if you have it . the cowl tag is on the bulkhead or fire wall as you call it on drivers side. I think im right
