I to my distributor apart to shim the gear before I put it in the 350, and I just realized I didn't mark the gear to know which way it goes. Does the dot on the gear face the same way as the tip of the rotor or is it opposite I cant remember? Also how much total advance does a Pontiac 350 typically like I was thinking about 35 degrees?

Just so everyone knows in case they ever come across this, the dot on the distributor gear matches where the rotor points. I pulled 2 distributors out of cars at work today to make sure.

thanks... i have always wondered that... i have pulled apart so many HEI's but i always just scribe a line that lines up with the dot... and goes all the way across the various parts on the top... as when i have the gear off.. i use some carb spray into the upsidedown housing and work the shaft out..   in and out.. while twisting. until it is free to slide out..

then i take the top apart.. slide the mechanical advance part off the shaft, clean and lube it..   if the pick up coil has not been changed.. it is a great time to change it.. ...
