I have a 400 WT in my 67 gto. Would a 1 ton hoist pull the motor out with no problems or do I need a 2 ton? I am dropping the trans out prior to the engine pull.
Also, would an engine stand with 750lb capacity work or do I need to go bigger?

Personally I would get the 2 ton hoist.
I would also get a 1000LB capacity engine stand much more sturdy.

I have a 2 ton lift.I have to extend the lift arm out to the 1000 lb. slot to reach into the engine compartment far enough to pick the motor. I used it to remove and reinstall the body on my car too. It did leave a little bit to be desired when doing that. I think this is common with the non-pro lifts. Yes go for the 1000 lb. stand.

One more question. I am going to paint the motor while it is out. I've got the right part number for the block but I was wondering about the engine bay. It is black and I would like to touch it up. Is there a standard black paint used for the engine bay?

Any good fast drying Satin black will make it look stock for the engine compartment.
It's also called semi-flat black. there is also a special semi-flat black rust inhibitor that can be used over light rust to protect the metal. I sprayed it on everything in my engine compartment and frame, and then followed it up with the satin black - it looks great.

On the engine mount thing, just make sure it's a four wheel deal and not a three wheel. I once dumped a 400 on the concrete with a three wheeler.
peace

PS. Watch the distributor when you lift the engine in and out, it can clank against the firewall and bend accidently.
