HELP! I need a Pitman Arm for a 1969 Firebird V8 PS
The one I got has too small a hole in it for the centerlink
Need one size up on the tapered fitting
It is a "non-wearing" part so nobody has one "in stock"
MOOG does not make one.
Tried all the junk yards in the Phoenix area - no luck
Any more ideas?
I know, it's not red

1967 - 1969 Pitman Arm - V8 Engine and curved pitman arm - Manual Steering model
Part Number : 85-80030 N

Description : V8 Engine and curved pitman arm - Manual Steering model

1967 - 1969 Pitman Arm - V8 Engine and curved pitman arm - Power Steering model
Part Number : 85-80031 N

Description : V8 Engine and curved pitman arm - Power Steering model

this is one link that showed the above...

http://www.carsteering.com/steeringmodels/1969/Pontiac/Firebird/Pitman_Arm.html

the part numbers actually look like they might be from rare parts... who makes new steering and suspension parts....   they only sell as i recall to wholesale people... so take the part number above to your local autoparts store.. see what they can get... or order it from the link

i happen to have a 75 pars and labor manual....

here are some factory part numbers... via chilton...

center drag link....
1968 firebird           3953221
1969 firebird...  six  5697552.
........................  v8  7806827
the .. 7806827 is also used on 72 venturas with a 350 motor and 73 to 75 venturas.. which makes sense since they share the same subframe as first generation F bodys..

pitman arm.

there are a bunch of different numbers...
here is the 69 firebird numbers

w/o ps 7806626
with ps 7806617

idler arm...
69 firebird
7806615

sure helps to have old books around..

i found the pitman arm .. on a google search.. for 1969 firebird pitman arm... there are a lot of other vendors..

guess what i found... an early  firebird parts manual section online...

http://www.teufert.net/partbook/67-76/6-p.pdf

you will also want this...

http://www.teufert.net/partbook/67-76/6-i.pdf     it is the pictures to go with above...

one more thing....  can you measure the center to center length of your various parts.????   5 and a quarter inches  or 5 and 3/4 inches????

Hey you could maybe take the center link and arm to a machine shop and have the tapered hole enlarged. Just a thought. Where did you get the one that doesn't fit?

gtojack1366 --> your an ex corporate Pontiac Mechanic?
Wow! the info is great! Thank you very much.

Called  Frank's but he is out until the 16th.
I tracked down another one with the info you provided.
The pictures are worth 10,000 words!
Found it @ a yard here in Phx after I showed him the picture
$30 - thats cool!

Seems I have a mix of Pontiac years still on this car.
The pitman arm I have is from a 70-73 PMW GTO V8 it is short 5.25" with a small flare for the centerlink end. No wonder it does not fit!
Also won't work with Doug's hedders (1-3/4" equal tube)
The one that you gave me the picture of works perfectly!
Really appreciate the help.

The other 69 FBird (bluebird) I have has the full 5.75" pitman arm, 5.75" idler, 1.125" center link (aftermarket larger than stock) from a 69 Camaro with 12:1 aftermarket PS box. It has the "high flow" Ram Air D-Port Exhaust Manifolds from Butler Performance (came with the car). The maro steering linkage just clears the manifolds and the geometry stays square with the frame lock to lock.

I thought about doing the same to the redbird but it won't clear the headders (straight pitman arm). Gotta have the curve.

Grin  Cool

OOPS! waynep7122 is the corporate PMW Mechanic with the books!
Really appreciate the help from ALL of you guys!

I'm going to shoot a bunch of pictures and post them on my WEB site.
Right now the only thing on it is the old 65 Mustang Convertible I fixed up and sold quick. I was afraid it would bust in half if I put some HP in it.

The site is http://nabours.org just click on the wors "Mustang Pictures"
and they will load. Pics are befor I cleaned it up and made it a "daily driver"
(the pics are full size so they take a while to load)

I'll put up links for "69 Firebird - Red" & "69 Firebird - Warwick Blue"
I know, it's not red

by the way... when you get the proper pitman arm... can you take some  photos of it..

straight down from the top...   straight on from the front...  left  side.. right side..    perhaps the forging number on it...   perhaps.. the idler arm also..

this might help future owners of 69 firebirds get the rights parts on their cars..

I need a pitman arm for a 69 firebird with manual steering (part# 7806626, curved with smaller splined hole for manual box). Looks just like the one pictured above, except for the spline size is smaller. This part fits a 69 firebird only! Going from power steering to manual for drag racing, thanks. Dan

I tried, but no luck. Not many 69 firebirds with manual steering. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello, just bought a pitman arm universal for my car online. You might want to try searching for that car part online. Some car parts stores online offer some car parts that are not available in some local stores. I hope this might help you.. Smile
