Okey Dokey

I have just observed the stupidiest (sp?) commercial on ABC. The theme was " What Do Mechanics Love."  The commercial went through various scenes of "mechanics" frothing at the mouth over oil leaks, exhaust leaks, fuel leaks, and everything else that we work so hard to delete.

Angleton Raceway in, umm... Angleton, just bit the dust. Pisses me off because our pal O'Pontee wanted Cil and I to see he and his lovely wife race their Firebird and Camaro. Something always came up and I had to work, but I'm sure O & S will find (or build) a new race track. I'll donate an analog tree. (gives ya a little leeway upon start up).

Well Braz, I've been twisting wrenches for a living for almost 23 years now and there are few things that I love to see. The first thing that gets me grinning (now remember, I work in a diesel truck shop) is when some trucker rolls in with an older, pre-electronics  big-bore diesel engine in a classic long hood highway tractor with straight pipe exhaust! There is nothing that tickles my ears like the sound of an unmuffled diesel pulling a heavy load. I will gladly work on that anyday rather than beat my nerves raw on some of the emissions laden aerodynamic crap forced upon the industry by government regs. Of course, the chance to work on any non-electronic engine whether it is a car, lawn mower or big rig is a treat to me, any day that I don't have to start work with a laptop is a good one! I love to do "inframe" overhauls of diesel engines, at least when I have one to do, I know that i will be left alone for at least a week with nobody bugging me.

I agree,,, I loved working on the old 8-71 Jimmy's with that erratic surging idle.
N14's are ok and so are the big Cats,,, but the old stuff still gets my blood pumping like the real old ThermoDynes,,,

guess we're showing our age, huh

Tuff, Wow! Talk about showing your age !!! Most of the old 2-stroke Jimmys had gone the way of the T-rex by the time I switched to diesel. Ditto the Thermodyne. There were still plenty of big-cam 3&4 855 Cummins and 3406B/C Cats when I showed up on the scene but they were transitioning to the N14 and 3406E, of course by then the Detroit series 60 was already well established. I always found the N14 to be the most reliable of the bunch, 3406E's had a habit of losing injector tips as did the Series 60. But the best was seeing Series 60's come in on the hook with the ECM hanging by the wires off the side of the block because #3 rod had kicked out and punched a window thru both sides! When asked what happened, the French driver replied in broken English: "It go, knocka-knocka-knocka.....and I close da switch!"!!

Yea Joe, maybe one day we will meet in person. It's not like we live more than a hour from each other.

I love the swagger a mechanic has, i'm a dealership technician and nothing pumps my chest out more than to see the pencil neck geeks come in with there wives for a simple maintenence item that they could do themselves and explain how elementary the service is, and how it could have saved you $$$$$. 10 out of 10 times the wives look at me like i'm the He-Man their mother's wanted them to be with (sorry gals i'm taken) but i try not to embarass but explain "man you could handle this" and usually the dude agrees and feels good about where to bring his ride (repeat customers!)except next time he comes alone.lol

Bobbie, nothing like that swagger....I call it the Wife Steal Walk. Cil's used to it. Caused some problems over the years, but if your born with it - it's just there.
We've managed to stick together since the 70's.

Well, gotta go find someone to check my oil.

Mechanics love having to change bent lower control arms on nissan's and toyotas and making 8 hours flat rate pay for a 1 hour job.
