I upgraded to a MSD 6al digital ignition .I can't get my hood tach to work it worked before the upgrade .I hooked up the gray tach wire from the MSD but the tach does nothing .The chart said GM cars bypass in-line filter ? I don't see any filter . Some of the other cars the chart said you have to use a adapter ? Has anyone else had this problem ?   Confused

Look in the ames catalog Jack, I think I saw a filter in there. Yeah it's a Tach adapter from MSD P/N N219WL. I didn't need one on mine but it's not stock. Hope this helps....oh BTW it cost 69.00 Shocked -T

Summit racing has the same adapter for 58.95 there are differant ones I need the one that is used with a magnetic pickup trigger . I just wanted to make sure I needed it first because the chart said GM cars bypass in line filter .It's just another way for them to make money ! They could have made a digital box that you could hook a tach up to with out a adapter ! It looks like I'll be buying a adapter !  Tongue    Msdboxchart

That sucks that you buy a performance based ignition system then have to buy something that costs more than a tach, just to hook a tach to it. Goofy as hell.

one thing.... that does not get spoken much....

MSD runs significant voltage to the primary side positive side of the coil...   much higher than the 12 to 14 volts the battery supplies..    when the negative side is not grounded.. there is enough voltage on the negative side to fry most tachs...

so you never want to hook your tach up to the negative side of the coil like it was...

remember the 1980s.. with all the great big tune up scopes... dozens if not hundreds were blown up by people hooking up cars with MSD ignitions..   the scopes were not designed for the amount of voltage the MSD put out on the primary side..

if your current TACH is not functioning..    you might want to remove it if possible.. or extend both the ground and the tach wire to another car with conventional ignition .. see if it still works..

on the MSD site.. there is a trouble shooting manual to download.. covers most of the hook ups.. and problem issues..

I'm going to hook the tach up to my Chevelle and see if it still works and then order the adapter . When I tested the tach wire from the MSD box I was getting 6 1/2 volts . The tach never moved with the MSD box hooked up .  It better work it's a 200 dollar ram air 4 hood tach !  Shocked

GTO, you may not want to listen to me, but when my brother hooked the ones up on his 2 cars, and he is going to hook the one on my convertible up this way, he did not hook them up to the ignition. And the wiring harness with my convertible shows that is not the correct way.  When they came from factory, they hooked with the dash/headlights so when you turned your lights on and off the tach went off and on.  If you follow the instructions from  AMES, the tach light stays on all the time.  The wiring harness in my convertible has 4 wires, the harness from AMES has only 3.  Just telling you how my brother hooks them up.  You can do away with hooking it to the ignition that way.

I hooked jumper cables from the GTO to the Chevelle and hooked the tach wire to the Hei on the Chevelle and the tach works fine . I ordered the tach adapter from Summit it was 68.90 with shipping included what a rip off !   Mad

If you would like, I can ask my brother how he hooked the two up he has on his cars.  I am going to have him hook mine up to my convertible.  The ones he hooked up to his cars turn on and off with the lights, instead of coming on, and staying on, all the time, when you start your car.  He said that from factory, the tachs, are supposed to only come on when you turn your lights on.  That is up to you, let me know.  That is how I definately want mine hooked up, not to the ignition.

See where the red connector is on the right? That's where I hooked mine up:

My MSD box is differant it doesn't have that red connector on the side it's the new digital 6al box .I got the tach adapter today and hooked the wires up and the tach works fine . Now I just need to hide the adapter box and wires somewere ? I don't think anybody would want to look at a tach adapter box ! But it doesn't look like MSD thinks so they tried to make it look like the MSD box .  Tongue
