In the process of restoring a 69 Pontiac Lemans convertible.  The car has the "Deluxe Wheel Discs" and I would like to keep them as part of the restoration.  Can't figure out how to pst photo.

Does anyone know of someone who would restore the condition of them?  There is no physical damage to them, however, the black paint at the perimeter is faded and the center cap is slightly faded.

Thanks - J

Hello and welcome. Wish I could see them. Easiest is to host your pics on a site like photobucket or a blog, and place the picture link from there in a post using the cut and paste method. Click "preview" to see if you got it right before clicking "post".

If the center caps are faded paint behind clear plastic, those will probably require replacements. Have you shopped for those new? If there is a bright area like chrome, it may be polished stainless and that will polish right up. If they are plated, be careful. Metal polishing is its own art, and I haven't done any. But parts-store rubbing compound or polish might do plenty, with sufficient elbow grease or a slow wool polishing pad. If the black paint isn't peeling, just faded, I recommend repainting over it, of course with proper surface preparation and masking. It would be an easy at-home, spare-time project. Theres probably about five of us here who would freshen up your hubcaps if you send 'em!

Thanks for the welcome and the photo help.  I have attached a couple links for photos of the wheel covers and caps(hopefully works).  I have shopped for new center caps and assumed I will probably have to purchase new ones.  I’m able to clean and polish the metal cover.  I guess the good thing is that the paint is fading and not peeling.  My question really comes down to the black paint and to make sure I’m using the correct black paint.  How would I go about finding out the correct paint to use?

jbut3, those are the same covers that my 70 Tempest came with, well it came with two in the trunk! I found a decent set on eBay but they too need resto work like yours. I haven't really spent much time looking yet, but I believe Ames has the correct center emblems and the color in the inset of the spokes looks almost like a dark metallic gray on mine. I also found some new center emblems on eBay but I haven't bought them yet. I thought mine would look good with a set of redline tires, either repro wide ovals or redstripe BFG radials. Mine will be just for show, since I am building a 450+hp 400(406) and I will need more rubber than the skinny 14" wheels can hold. I will be running a set of 15x8 rally2's out back with either 255 or 275/60R15's and 15x7's up front with either 225/70 or 235/60R15's.

A little help... 'cause we don't all have to learn the hard way!

Ah- now I see! You're welcome.

I don't know what gloss level would be correct, unfortunately. I bet one of the others does, though. If you're going for correctness, the application method might be as important as the paint. I say that because it may have been brushed, rolled, or sprayed.

Myself, hmmm ... I would probably clean (with wax and grease remover or at least strong rubbing alcohol) and mask it off (using 1/4" masking tape or 1/8" plastic fine line tape), scuff the existing finish with a grey or maroon scotch brite or 400-600 grit sandpaper, and use a light application of aerosol engine paint.

Those should look nice all spiffed up, the darker part still looks nice!
