Hi,
Have a little problem I hope someone can help me with.. I have a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am that had a Olds 403 & I putting in a Pontiac 400... I'm having a problem with the frame mounts lining up with the holes in the frame.. The frame has a # of holes on each side & this car came with both motor so I was hoping this would be a easy switch.. I'm using the same frame mounts that were used with the 403 & got new motor mounts for the 400.. From the research I have done this should work but I cannot get both sides to line up... Any Suggestions???
thx, Jerry

I would think the Pontiac mounts or stands would be different than olds motor stands. The subframe has holes for all motors.

Piazzaj, welcome to HPP.
I did the same swap. My method was to put the whole engine mounting brackets together on the engine - including the part that bolts to the frame. Then lower the engine into the compartment just far enough to where the mounts are touching the cross frame. Center it by eye and mark an outline around the mounts with a white grease pencil. Once the frame has reference marks drawn on it you can lift the engine back up, remove the frame mounts and place them over your outlines. At that point the position should be close enough to tell which holes to use.
BTW, I THINK the part that bolts on the frame is the same one for the 403 and 400, you might check for sure. The correct ones are available at most auto parts - I got mine at O'Reillys for about $25 each.
Good luck!

There are two types of mounting brackets for pontiac engines. One is taller than the other, this might be the problem you're running into. -T

Those brackets that bolts to the engine are definitely different between the Olds and Pontiac blocks. The flexable frame mount that has the long bolt through it should be the same though for both applications.
T, are those brackets in the pic from the lemans? The engine probably sets at a different height than the F-Body cars.
