Alternator Question

Hello everyone. I recently changed out my pulleys to a later style and went with a 75 alternator with the internal regulator. There are two wires on the pigtail and I'm sure that one (red) goes to the battery. There is one more that is white. Where does that one go to? I thought I read that it is for the idiot lights, so might not need them. Any help out there?
Thanks, Kats

big wire on the threaded stud stays the same... right to the battery positive..
big wire on the side can attach to the rear terminal of the alternator also...
the small wire from the side needs to connect to the #4 wire from the old voltage regulator..
there is a way to use the existing wiring between the back of the 10DN alternator and the old voltage regulator plug..
by just removing the terminals from the plastic connector and moving them to the new style.. and running 2 jumpers at the regulator connector.. somebody will have a diagram for it..
as i recall the middle two connectors are jumped at the regulator connector..
the outer two are also jumped..
the OUTER two need to connect to the smaller wire to the side of the 10SI alternator..
if you purchased a ONE wire alternator... all you need is the output wire on the back.. .. the side connector does not have to be used..
PLEASE use a digital volt meter to verify that the car is charging..
engine off..
digital volt meter set to 20 volts DC..
12.65 volts is a fully charged battery.. 12.45 volts is a 3/4 charged battery. 12.25 volts is a 1/2 charged battery.
with the engine running.. if the alternator is working properly.. the charging voltage should be between 14.1 and 14.7 volts..
if you have installed a ONE wire voltage regulator.. while inside.. some .. not all have a resistor between two of the voltage regulator hold down bolts.. with a one wire voltage regulator.. (self energizing..) you have to remove the resistor..

On the 2 terminal plug,,, the white wire is for the guage or idiot light.
The red wire is connected to a >switched< 12v source.
Of course the lug with the bolt on the back goes to the battery.
